What is affordable?

It is generally accepted that, to be affordable, housing should cost no more than 30% of a family's income.

Many hard-working people are forced to live beyond their means because middle-income wages haven't kept up with high costs of living, including housing.

For people earning minimum wage, the problem is even worse. For them to afford fair market rent, they'd have to work upwards of 60 hours per week.
